The Archbishopric of Vienna was suppressed by Joseph II in 1782 as part of his sweeping Josephinist reforms dismantling the institutional church's temporal power in Habsburg lands. This thaler, struck in 1781 under Archbishop Christoph Anton von Migazzi, almost certainly predates the formal dissolution order by months — making it effectively the final coinage of an ecclesiastical authority on the verge of forced extinction.
