Additional information

Christian William of Brandenburg was appointed Administrator of Magdeburg in 1598 — a Protestant holding a nominally Catholic see, a compromise arrangement that satisfied no one and ultimately contributed to the archbishopric becoming one of the first major flashpoints of the Thirty Years' War. He would eventually side openly with the Swedes, be captured by imperial forces, and die in 1665 having never recovered his seat. This 1613 thaler predates that catastrophe by five years, struck when his position was still tenable and the archbishopric's mint was functioning with some regularity.
