Aversbeschreibung Elaborate quartered coat of arms of Brunswick-Lüneburg displayed centrally in the field, surmounted by five ornate crested helmets with elaborate mantling fanning outward. The achievement features multiple heraldic charges including lions, a horse, and other dynastic devices across the quartered shield. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire design, with the mintmaster's initials (HS) incorporated into the field flanking the shield.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse bears a bold, multi-line funerary inscription in Latin filling the entire field, commemorating the life and reign of Duke Christian Louis. The text records his birth on 25 February 1622, his rule over the Duchy of Calenberg for seven years, and his governance of Celle, Grubenhagen, and the Counties of Hoya and Diepholz for fifteen years, concluding with the date of his death on 15 March 1665. The inscription is presented in a monumental epigraphic style typical of German memorial thalers of the period, with no additional border ornament beyond the coin's milled edge.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Christian Louis, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, died in March 1665 after a reign marked largely by the slow consolidation of Celle as the dominant line within the fractured Welf inheritance. This thaler is a memorial issue struck in the year of his death — a common practice among German territorial mints of the period, where death thalers served both as dynastic proclamation and as distributed mourning objects among the court. The Celle mint was active but not prolific, and memorial pieces from this specific duchy are considerably less common in the market than comparable issues from Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
