Christian II ruled Anhalt-Bernburg through some of the most destructive years of the Thirty Years' War, a conflict that physically reduced much of the Anhalt principalities to ash and near-depopulation. The war's disruption to silver supply chains and the general collapse of trade made large thaler production across small German states erratic — this issue spans nearly a decade precisely because consistent minting was impossible rather than by design.
Anhalt-Bernburg had formally adopted Calvinist doctrine in the early seventeenth century, a politically dangerous position in a war partly fought over confessional lines. Christian II died in 1656, having outlasted the Peace of Westphalia by eight years but leaving a principality economically gutted.
