Christian Frederick Charles Alexander ruled Brandenburg-Ansbach from 1757 until his abdication in 1791, when he ceded the entire margraviate to Prussia — a transfer negotiated largely to satisfy his personal debts and fund his retirement to England with his mistress, Lady Craven. The 1775 date places this coin squarely in the period when Ansbach was also supplying troops to Britain for use in the American Revolutionary War, a transaction that generated considerable cash flow through the margraviate's treasury.
The Konventionstaler standard, established by the Austro-Bavarian convention of 1753, fixed output at ten thalers per Cologne mark of silver.
