Christian of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel administered the Bishopric of Halberstadt as a Protestant administrator at a moment when the Thirty Years' War was tearing the region apart. He was so aggressively anti-Catholic that he earned the epithet "der tolle Christian" — Mad Christian — and the coin's popular name, Pfaffenfeind, translates bluntly as "enemy of priests." He is said to have melted church silver to strike his military coinage, and this thaler is widely believed to be among those issues.
Christian was defeated at the Battle of Höchst in 1622, the same year this piece was struck.
