Christian August, Count of Solms-Laubach, married Johanna Eleonora of Solms-Rödelheim in 1738. Marriage thalers from the smaller German counties were struck in deliberately limited quantities — part gift, part dynastic announcement — and Solms-Laubach, a county of negligible political weight within the Holy Roman Empire, would have had little cause or means to produce these in volume. Most examples passed directly into family collections rather than trade circulation, which accounts for the survival of specimens in comparatively sound condition.
