Christian of Liegnitz-Brieg ruled under the long shadow of Habsburg pressure to reclaim Silesian duchies for the imperial crown. The Piast line governing Liegnitz-Brieg had survived longer than most Silesian branches, but Christian died in 1672 without a male heir, and the Habsburgs absorbed the duchy almost immediately under the terms of a succession treaty the Silesian Piasts had been maneuvering around for decades. These thalers were struck knowing the dynasty was running out of time.
