Charles Thomas ruled one of the smaller Rhenish territories, and the Löwenstein-Wertheim line had been divided since 1635 into the Protestant Freudenberg and Catholic Rochefort branches — this piece comes from the Catholic side, which maintained closer ties to the Habsburg court. Thaler production from Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort was never continuous; issues tend to cluster around specific political moments or financial needs rather than regular annual minting cycles.
The Davenport 2407B designation distinguishes this from the primary variety by a detail in the die work catalogued by Wibel across references 294–296, suggesting at least minor punch variation within the 1769 issue itself.
