| Aanvullende informatie |
Charles Theodore inherited the Palatinate electorate in 1742 and the Bavarian electorate in 1777, a dynastic accident that made him one of the most territorially significant princes in the Holy Roman Empire — and one of the most unpopular. His 1778 attempt to cede much of Bavaria to Austria in exchange for the Austrian Netherlands triggered the War of the Bavarian Succession, a conflict Frederick the Great ended largely through diplomatic pressure rather than bloodshed. By 1781, Charles Theodore was ruling from Munich, effectively an absentee ruler of the Palatinate, and coinage continued under Konventionstaler standards established by the 1753 Munich Convention.
