1 Thaler - Charles III Joseph of Lorraine

Charles III Joseph of Lorraine became Prince-Bishop of Olomouc in 1695 at age fourteen, an appointment engineered entirely by his uncle, Duke Leopold of Lorraine, through Habsburginfluence at Rome. He held the see until his death in 1711, making this two-year thaler issue one of the final coinages of his episcopate. The Bishopric of Olomouc was among the wealthiest ecclesiastical territories in Moravia, with the right to strike silver long established — but output was never prolific, and pieces from the 1709–1710 run appear in relatively modest numbers across major collections.
