Charles III Joseph of Lorraine became Prince-Bishop of Olomouc in 1695 at the age of fourteen — an appointment driven entirely by Habsburg dynastic politics rather than ecclesiastical vocation. He held the see until his death in 1711, and his tenure coincided with the War of the Spanish Succession, which drained Moravian resources and made silver coinage of this weight increasingly difficult to sustain. The 1703 date places this piece squarely in the middle of that financial strain.
Davenport's attribution confirms this as a standard episcopal thaler of the period, struck at Olomouc under episcopal mint rights that would not survive much beyond this generation.
