Charles I ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel through some of the most disruptive years of the Seven Years' War, during which Brunswick troops fought alongside Prussian and British forces and the principality's finances were strained by sustained military expenditure. Thalers of this reign were struck across that transition from wartime to uneasy peace, and the 1763 terminus coincides almost exactly with the Treaty of Hubertusburg. Dav GT II#2151 distinguishes this subtype within a crowded field of Brunswick issues — the principality produced an unusually dense series of thaler varieties across the mid-eighteenth century, partly driven by the need to pay troops in hard currency.
