Maria Amalia of Courland, wife of Landgrave Charles of Hesse-Cassel, died in April 1711. Memorial thalers of this type were a well-established practice among German princes — grief made public through silver, distributed to court and nobility as a mark of dynastic mourning. The specific Schütz and Davenport references here place this firmly within the documented struck series rather than later cast commemoratives, which is a meaningful distinction for survivors of this type.
