Obverse description Central field occupied by the elaborately rendered quartered arms of the Archbishopric of Trier, encompassing the traditional red and silver stripes of Trier with an inescutcheon bearing the arms of the von der Leyen family (a stag), the whole surmounted by an electoral hat (bonnet) above an ornate baroque cartouche with foliate and scroll mantling. A small wheel — the wheel of Mainz or an electoral badge — appears to the left of the shield. The surrounding legend, separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle, reads: + CAROL • CASPAR • D ° G ° ARCHIEP • TREVIR • PRINC • ELECT • ADMI • PRVM. The coin's milled edge with a rope-like border frames the entire composition.
