Obverse description At center, the crowned shield of Strasbourg bearing the city arms — a bend sinister — displayed within an ornate cartouche with decorative foliate detailing. The arms are set within a beaded inner circle, around which runs a double concentric Latin legend in two registers separated by rosette stops: the outer beginning with OMNIS TERRA ADORET DEVM ET PSALLAT EI and the inner continuing LVX POST TENEBRAS MDXVII, together forming a devotional motto referencing the light of the Reformation following the darkness, with the date 1517 commemorating Luther's theses. The field is plain and the legends are rendered in an upright Roman capital script typical of early seventeenth-century German commemorative coinage.
