The "Zwitter-Taler" designation is not a quality assessment — it refers to a mule, a coin struck from dies that were never intended to be paired together. This specific pairing combines obverse and reverse dies from different intended issues of the August taler series, almost certainly the result of a deliberate decision at the Dresden or Annaberg mint rather than an accident, since the physical labor of changing dies made unintentional mismatches essentially impossible under supervised production.
August, Elector of Saxony from 1553, aggressively expanded Saxon silver output from the Erzgebirge mines during precisely this period. The Zwitter designation in Schnee and Keil/Kahnt acknowledges this as a recognized variant, not an error to be dismissed.
