| Obverse description | Eleven-line Latin commemorative inscription filling the entire field, reading ANNO / M.DC.XXXIX / DIE XVIII OCTOBR / INTHRONISATIO / POSTULAT ARCHIP. / MAGDEB PRIMAE GERM / DNI AUGUSTI / DUC SAX IUL CLIV AC / MONT FIEBAT MORE / SOLENNI HALAE / SAXONUM., recording the date and place of the enthronement of Archbishop August of Saxony-Weissenfels at Halle on 18 October 1639. A small mintmaster's mark appears at the base of the inscription. The lettering is boldly engraved in a Roman capital style typical of early seventeenth-century German commemorative thalers. |
