| Aanvullende informatie |
August of Saxe-Weissenfels was appointed Administrator of Magdeburg in 1638 under the terms of the Peace of Prague (1635), which had stripped the See of its Protestant-elected administrator Ernst of Brandenburg and handed administration to the Hohenzollerns — only for August, a Wettin, to inherit the post following Ernst's death. The appointment was itself a product of exhausted diplomacy during the Thirty Years' War, with Magdeburg still smoldering from its catastrophic sack of 1631, in which perhaps 20,000 civilians died.
This enthronement thaler was struck to mark August's formal installation. The "B" variant suffix in both the Davenport and Schroetter references denotes a die variation within the issue.
