The "Glockentaler" — bell thaler — takes its name from the foundry scene struck to commemorate the casting of the great bell for the Marienkirche in Wolfenbüttel, ordered by Duke Augustus the Younger. August had the coin issued in 1643 specifically to mark that occasion, a practice of commemorative thaler production that Brunswick rulers had refined over generations into something approaching high art. The duchy was deep in the Thirty Years' War at this point, which makes the commissioning of a ceremonial church bell — and a coin to celebrate it — a deliberate act of civic and religious defiance.
