August the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, was one of the most prolific book collectors in seventeenth-century Europe — his library at Wolfenbüttel eventually became the Herzog August Bibliothek, still extant today. The thalers struck in his name during the final decade of his reign (he died in 1666 at age eighty-nine) were produced at the Zellerfeld mint, the primary facility serving the duchy's substantial Harz Mountain silver output.
Davenport's ST#6343 distinguishes this as a standard duchy issue within a complex series; Welter separates die marriages across several sub-varieties. The Harz mines were among the most productive in the Holy Roman Empire throughout this period, giving Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel an unusual degree of monetary autonomy for a mid-tier principality.
