| Aanvullende informatie |
Anthony Günter of Oldenburg was one of the longest-reigning German counts of the seventeenth century, holding power from 1603 until his death in 1667 — just one year after this piece was struck. The 83rd birthday thaler belongs to a well-established tradition among northern German courts of issuing commemorative presentation thalers for significant birthday milestones, a practice that produced some of the most historically personalized coinage of the baroque period.
He died without legitimate male issue, and Oldenburg passed to the Danish crown shortly after. This coin was struck, in effect, on the eve of the county's absorption.
