The Abbey of Kempten was one of the oldest imperial abbeys in the Holy Roman Empire, holding the status of an Imperial Abbey (Reichsstift) with the abbot exercising both spiritual and secular authority as an Imperial Prince. Anselm of Reichlin-Meldegg served as Prince-Abbot from 1728 until his death in 1747, and this thaler was struck in the early months of his tenure — a standard assertion of princely coining rights that abbots were careful to exercise visibly.
Kempten's abbots had fought for decades to maintain those rights against the encroachments of the neighboring free imperial city of Kempten, a jurisdictional tension that ran through most of the abbey's early modern history.
