Struck to commemorate the Peace of Nijmegen, which concluded in 1678–79 after six years of warfare that had drawn in France, the Dutch Republic, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and several lesser powers. Anselm Franz von Ingelheim had been Archbishop-Elector of Mainz for barely two years when this piece was issued, and the peace gave him both occasion and political motivation to advertise his position among the imperial princes.
The Nijmegen treaties were unusual in producing separate agreements signed at intervals — the Franco-Dutch peace in August 1678, the Franco-Spanish in September, the Franco-Imperial not until February 1679. This thaler almost certainly postdates that final instrument.
