Anselm Casimir Wamboldt of Umstadt governed the Archbishopric of Mainz from 1629 until his death in 1647, presiding through some of the most destructive years of the Thirty Years' War. Mainz itself had been occupied by Swedish forces in 1631 and only restored to imperial control in 1636 — meaning these thalers were struck in the immediate aftermath of reconquest, with the archbishopric's finances and mint operations rebuilding from near-collapse.
