Obverse description Central field occupied by a large crowned shield bearing the quartered arms of Transylvania, comprising the seven castles of Saxony, the Transylvanian eagle, the sun and crescent moon, and the Barcsai family arms, all surmounted by an ornate royal crown with elaborate foliate mantling. The shield is flanked by decorative cartouche work. A beaded inner circle surrounds the arms, with the circular Latin legend ACHAIVS BARCSAI D G PRIN TRANS reading around the periphery. The coin is struck within a toothed outer border typical of hammered Transylvanian thalers of the period.
