Issued to mark the 200th anniversary of Luther's 1517 posting of the Ninety-Five Theses, this thaler was one of dozens of commemorative pieces struck across the Protestant German states in 1717 — a year the Lutheran establishment treated with extraordinary ceremony. Adolphus Frederick III used the occasion as much for dynastic self-presentation as for theological commemoration; Mecklenburg-Strelitz was a minor duchy with limited minting output, and a commemorative of this scale was a deliberate statement.
The centenary in 1617 had similarly produced a wave of Reformation thalers, establishing a tradition the 1717 issues self-consciously continued.
