Adolph von Dalberg served as Prince-Abbot of Fulda from 1726 until his death in 1737, presiding over an ecclesiastical principality that had operated as an independent imperial abbey since the Carolingian period. Fulda's abbots held the rank of Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, giving them full authority to strike coinage — a right the abbey exercised with considerable ambition throughout the eighteenth century.
The Dalberg family was among the most politically connected noble houses in the Rhineland, and Adolph's tenure coincided with a period of active building and patronage at Fulda, including the completion of the baroque cathedral consecrated just four years before this thaler was struck.
