Nuremberg struck thalers under imperial license but as a self-governing city retained tight control over its own coinage — a privilege it defended jealously against both Bavarian encroachment and Habsburgs attempts to standardize German silver. By 1765, the city's financial position was deteriorating badly; decades of war debt from the Seven Years' War, which had ended just two years prior, had strained municipal coffers to the point where coinage policy became a matter of civic survival rather than prestige.
