Dortmund's status as a Free Imperial City gave it the right to strike its own coinage, a privilege it exercised intermittently and often contentiously with neighboring territorial powers. By 1683, the city's minting activity was already anachronistic — most comparably sized Imperial cities had effectively ceded monetary production to larger regional authorities decades earlier.
