Beschrijving voorzijde The helmeted civic arms of Halberstadt displayed centrally in the field, comprising a quartered shield with a crancelin (crown-ring) device, supported by two rampant lions as heraldic supporters. Above the shield rises an elaborate closed helmet surmounted by a crown with two crossed lances or banners as the crest. The composition is rendered in high relief with fine baroque detail. The surrounding legend reads MONETA. NOVA: ARG. C. HALBERSTADENSIS., contained within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Halberstadt occupied an awkward political position throughout the seventeenth century — nominally a prince-bishopric, then stripped of ecclesiastical status by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, and absorbed into Brandenburg shortly after. This thaler was struck by the city itself during that transitional decade, when civic coinage served as much as an assertion of remaining municipal authority as it did a practical monetary instrument. Brandenburg's grip was tightening, and city-issued thalers of this type ceased within a generation.
