Obverse description Central field depicts the three-towered gate of Hamburg — the city's heraldic castle — rendered in high relief with a prominent portcullis flanked by crenellated towers and battlemented walls. The date appears within the legend at the top of the coin. The circumferential legend reads MONETA NOVA CIVITATIS HAMBURGENSIS, separated by stops and enclosed within a beaded inner border. The design is characteristic of the bold, architectural style employed on Hamburg municipal coinage of the mid-seventeenth century.
