Erfurt in 1633 sat at the epicenter of the Thirty Years' War — Swedish forces had occupied the city since 1631, and this thaler was struck under that occupation, making it a product of Swedish administrative control rather than purely civic authority. The city's mint was extraordinarily active during this period, producing emergency and commemorative coinage as the war reshaped political allegiances across Thuringia.
