Obverse description Central field depicts the crowned arms of Emden: a shield bearing a double-headed eagle displayed above a masonry wall with waves below, rendered in high relief in the hammered style. The crowned shield is flanked by decorative supporters and rests above a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery within a beaded border, reading MONETA. NOVA. CIVITATIS. EMBDENSIS, proclaiming the coin as new coinage of the city of Emden. The mintmaster's mark appears at the base of the shield in the lower field.
