Stade's thalers of this period reflect the city's precarious position as a contested commercial hub on the Lower Elbe. The city had been under Danish influence and would soon find itself drawn into the catastrophic violence of the Thirty Years' War, which broke out just two years after this piece was struck. Swedish forces would occupy Stade in 1712, effectively ending the city's independent monetary ambitions long before the eighteenth century closed.
