Lübeck's status as a Free Imperial City gave it the right to strike its own coinage, a privilege it defended fiercely against encroachment from the surrounding Duchy of Holstein. These thalers were produced during a period when the city's commercial dominance in the Baltic was already in structural decline — Amsterdam and Hamburg were rapidly absorbing trade routes that Lübeck had controlled for two centuries through the Hanseatic network.
Behr 135b is distinguished from the closely related 135a by a minor legend variation, a detail that trips up collectors who rely on KM alone.
