Bremen's thalers of this period were struck under the city's status as a Free Imperial City — a designation it had held since the medieval period but which was under increasing pressure from the surrounding Duchy of Bremen, controlled by the Archbishop. The early 1600s were a particularly tense moment in that friction, coming just over a decade before the Thirty Years' War would make the region a contested zone. The city's insistence on minting its own coinage was a deliberate assertion of that independence, not administrative routine.
The KM#52.1 designation distinguishes this from related die marriages in the series. Jungk#445 remains the standard reference for Bremen municipal coinage.
