Obverse description The Hamburg city arms depicted as a three-towered white castle (Hammaburg) with an arched gateway at center, set within a beaded inner circle. The fortified walls and towers are rendered in fine relief in the hammered style typical of late 16th-century German coinage. The circular legend surrounding the arms reads MONETA. NOVA. CIVITATIS. HAMBVRG, identifying this as new coinage of the city of Hamburg.
