Obverse description Central field displays the enthroned figure of Saint John the Evangelist, patron saint of Lübeck, depicted facing left and seated within a decorative cartouche, holding a book and raising his right hand in a gesture of blessing; an eagle, his traditional attribute, appears beside him to the right. The city arms of Lübeck — a crowned double-headed eagle — are incorporated into the composition. A beaded inner border separates the central design from the outer legend. The circumferential Latin legend reads MONETA. NOVA. LVBECENS. with the date 1596 appearing at the top of the field.
