| 裏面の説明 | Central field bears the Imperial double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, displayed with both heads crowned and surmounted by a single large crown above the shield on the breast, rendered in the characteristic late Renaissance heraldic style. The eagle's wings are spread symmetrically and finely engraved with feather detail. The surrounding circumferential legend in Latin abbreviation reads RVDOLPH. D. G. ROM. IMP. SEM. AVG., referring to Emperor Rudolf II, framed between inner and outer beaded borders. |

Rostock's civic coinage of the 1580s was produced under the authority of the city council at a moment when the Hanseatic League's commercial dominance was already visibly eroding. The city had long maintained its own mint as a mark of urban autonomy, a privilege increasingly difficult to defend as territorial princes consolidated control over money production across northern Germany.
Davenport 9689 is one of several thaler varieties attributable to Rostock in this decade, distinguished by subtle die differences that reflect small-batch production rather than any sustained minting program.
