Obverse description The Hamburg city arms — a three-towered castle gateway with portcullis — displayed prominently within a beaded inner circle, rendered in the bold Germanic style characteristic of late 16th-century Hanseatic coinage. The two flanking towers are surmounted by turrets, and the central gate features a raised portcullis below an arched pediment. The date appears incorporated into the circumferential Latin legend, which runs around the full perimeter of the coin. The field around the arms is flat and unadorned, directing full attention to the heraldic device.
