By 1571, the city was deeply entangled in the confessional politics that would eventually make it the target of one of the Thirty Years' War's most catastrophic events: the 1631 sack by Tilly's forces, which killed upward of 20,000 inhabitants and effectively ended Magdeburg's minting tradition.
