| Obverse description | Spread imperial double-headed eagle displayed in the field, with the crowned heads facing outward and the city arms of Metz borne on a shield superimposed on the breast. The circumferential Latin legend, incorporating the last two digits of the date, reads MONETA + NOVA + METENSIS + 71, distributed around the eagle within a plain inner circle.
