Additional information

Bremen's thalers of this period were struck under the authority of the city council at a moment when the Hanseatic port was asserting commercial independence against the encroachments of both the Archbishop of Bremen and the surrounding territorial princes. The city had no bishop-controlled mint — it ran its own, and that autonomy mattered deeply to the merchant oligarchs who financed it.

The Davenport reference to GT I#8987 places this among the early German thalers catalogued in the first volume, a grouping that rewards die study: Jungk distinguishes at least two varieties for 1568 (entries 436 and 439), differing in legend punctuation and die axis alignment rather than any substantive design change.
