Erfurt occupied an awkward political position in 1548 — nominally under the Archbishop of Mainz yet deeply sympathetic to the Lutheran Reformation, a tension that shaped every civic decision of the decade. The Augsburg Interim, imposed by Charles V that same year following his victory over the Schmalkaldic League, forced Protestant cities to make painful confessional concessions. Erfurt's civic coinage of this moment carries that pressure implicitly.
