The Kipper und Wipperzeit — literally "the time of clipping and see-sawing" — was a currency debasement crisis that swept the Holy Roman Empire between roughly 1619 and 1623. Mints across the empire, including Prague, raced to produce debased coinage, melting good silver and reminting it at fraudulent face values. Ferdinand II, having just crushed the Bohemian Protestant revolt at the Battle of White Mountain in November 1620, exploited the crisis aggressively: Bohemian mint revenues helped finance his ongoing military campaigns during the opening phases of what would become the Thirty Years' War.
The 120 Kreuzer valuation on a single Thaler-weight piece reflects the inflated tariff schedules of the period, not any honest silver content calculation.
