Reverse description Central shield bearing the crowned royal arms of Mary as Queen of Scotland and Queen Dowager of France, quartering the arms of Scotland and France ancient, surmounted by an imperial crown. A crowned gothic 'M' monogram appears to each side of the shield in the field. A circular Latin legend in majuscule lettering surrounds the entire design. The overall composition reflects the heraldic conventions of mid-16th-century Scottish regal coinage.
