Obverse description Left-facing bust of John George Palaeologus, Marquis of Montferrat, depicted in three-quarter profile wearing a flat cap and draped mantle in the Renaissance manner. The effigy occupies the majority of the field, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detailing of the facial features, headgear, and garment folds characteristic of early sixteenth-century Italian hammered coinage. A small cameo-like roundel appears above the bust at the top of the field. The surrounding circumferential legend in Latin reads IO GEORGIVS M MONTIS FERRATI, separated by dot stops, with the inscription running along a raised border.
