| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the heraldic shield of Pope Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi), divided into quarters displaying an eagle displayed in chief and a lion passant guardant below, with a base charged with goblets, all rendered in finely engraved relief. The papal coat of arms is surmounted by the tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, with elaborate Baroque mantling and tasselled cords flanking the escutcheon on either side. The circular Latin legend reading INNOCEN·XI··PONT·M·A·X· runs around the periphery, with the pontifical year notation incorporated into the design. The coin's rim is bordered by a continuous reeded or beaded edge collar. The overall design exhibits the high-relief Baroque engraving style characteristic of late seventeenth-century Roman papal coinage. |
