Additional information

Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — is the pope who bankrolled much of Christian Europe's resistance to the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, quietly financing John III Sobieski's Polish relief force when Catholic monarchs were slow to commit. The motto on this testone, drawn from Acts 20:35, was not a decorative platitude for Odescalchi; he had a documented reputation for personal austerity and redistributed substantial family wealth to charitable institutions before and during his pontificate.

He was beatified in 1956. The MIR records over three dozen die varieties for his testone issues, reflecting sustained high-volume production throughout his reign.
